2015 Pittsburgh High School Data Jam

After the enthusiastic participation in the pilot for the Pittsburgh Data Jam in 2014, Pittsburgh Dataworks was greatly excited to announce a new, expanded session for Spring 2015.

The second Data Jam event program kicked off in early Feb. 2015 and ended with the Spring 2015 Data Jam Finale on Tue., April 28. Students from eight area high schools: Avonworth, Bethel Park, Cornell, Ellis School, Fox Chapel, North Allegheny, South Fayette, and Springdale participated in the Spring 2015 Pittsburgh Data Jam to:

  • Learn how data is changing the way we live, work and play  
  • Get hands-on experience using data to analyze and solve problems
  • Learn to use new data visualization tool
  • Go on field trips to leading big data and analysis companies
  • Hold discussions with data analysts

The Data Jam Program

  • Approximately 100 students, in the 9th - 12th grade, participating in team challenge
  • 16-20 innovation teams with 5-7 students and 1 faculty member as mentor
  • Work on a data analysis problem - gather, visualize, analyze data to gain insights and draw conclusions
  • Field trips to companies using/offering big data technologies
  • Interviews with in-the-field data scientists
  • Duration: 6 weeks: Feb. - April

The Data Jam Finale {Tuesday, April 28}

The Spring 2015 Data Jam Finale was held April 28 at the University Club in the heart of the University of Pittsburgh. The Finale included the following:

Pittsburgh Data Jam Materials

The University of Pittsburgh Science Outreach program collaborated with Pittsburgh Dataworks to provide Data Jammers assistance with learning data visualization tools as well as presentation skills. You can visit the Pitt Science Outreach website to download Data Jam documents, information, mentor biographies, helpful manuals, and more!
